Welcome to Happy Trails, your peaceful mountain getaway in the heart of Leatherwood Mountains Resort. Located just a short scenic drive from the Visitor Center, this beautifully furnished cabin offers long-range Blue Ridge Mountain views, paved driveway access, and close proximity to horseback riding, hiking trails, and all of the amenities Leatherwood has to offer—while still being just a short drive from Boone and Blowing Rock.
Designed for both relaxation and adventure, Happy Trails features a full bathroom on each level, a queen bedroom on the main floor, and a spacious upstairs king suite complete with a whirlpool tub. Enjoy your mornings on the covered porch, unwind in the brand-new outdoor hot tub, or gather around the new propane firepit while taking in the cool mountain air and scenic views.
Inside, guests can also enjoy the newly added coffee bar featuring an initial supply of K-cups, creamers, sweeteners, and other coffee essentials to help start your mornings in the mountains. As a special touch, each reservation includes a complimentary “Happy Trails” coffee mug to take home and remember your stay.
Horse lovers will feel right at home. Happy Trails offers a 4-stall barn and pasture access available for an additional fee, making it an ideal destination for equestrians looking to explore Leatherwood’s extensive trail system. Trail access is located just steps from the property. Please note that roads within the community are narrow and steep, and larger horse trailers should use the designated parking area located across from the barn.

This home is located in the 4000 acre, Leatherwood Mountain Resort in Ferguson, NC. Our guests are invited to enjoy our Horseback Riding program where you can experience the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains pristine wilderness by Horseback (reservation required). You will have access to miles of hiking trails, mountain streams, stocked fishing pond, community swimming pool, play ground and tennis courts, creek tubing (seasonal), on-site restaurant with active live music & event calendar (guest advised to check hours when planning meals).
Leatherwood Mountains has surveillance or recording devices on the property. Our neighborhood is very safe and our property very secluded. For added peace of mind, we have security cameras by the gated entrance and common areas. Individual properties may also have cameras on the EXTERIOR of homes. Please be assured they are not directed at private areas, hot tub porches etc.

Wonderful Cabin and Horse Stalls

My sister, niece, and I have been to Leatherwood for last two summers camping with the horses, this was the first time I’ve rented a cabin. The cabin was beautiful with some spectacular sunsets. The cabin was decorated beautifully and we really enjoyed the hot tub after long and hard horse rides on the trails. I really enjoyed being by the trailheads (Daniel Boone). The horse paddock was very convenient so the horses didn’t have to spend all the time in the stalls. Will rent this cabin again!

Awesome
Man, this place is breathtaking. We usually vacation in Boone during the winter and this time we figured we would try something new. The interior and exterior of the property was perfect. The interior cowboy theme decorations was nice and homey. At night, the exterior of the home was very well lit, which eased the wife’s mind. This cabin is located at the very top of the mountain which made the view from the front porch was breathtaking. Our only complaint was that the hot tub seemed a bit strong with chemicals, it even turned our clothing another color, which I’m sure will be fixed. Would definitely recommend, and plan to make it back again soon.

We absolutely loved everything. We love to cook and the kitchen was very well equipped. The only thing I can say we could improve on is the sheets in the master suite. They were very scratchy. A nice set of sheets makes for a better nights sleep. Thanks for a beautiful stay in your beautiful home!!

Mountain Escape

Beautiful mountain home in Blue Ridge Mountains. This home is deep and high up into the leatherwood resort. The resort has everything you would need. We stayed in Happy Trails Cabin. There are many different names rentals and they are situated throughout hundreds of acres.
If you are a first time traveler to this area keep in mind it takes a long time to go anywhere. Your gps may say 16 miles. But over the mountains and through the woods can take 45 minutes to an hour.
My GPS worked well and we used WAZE. From the bottom of the resort to our cabin was a good 12-15 minutes. I would most definitely stop on way in to get essentials and then maybe make a day out of going to the store. They have a pool and playground for kids and we took a family trail ride. You couldn’t want for anything here. Restaurant on site is only open Friday Sat Sunday. Not sure if they would have a need for it but it would be great to have it open all week long seeing as there are no really food establishments near by.

Great mountain weekend!

We were looking for a long weekend to spend in the mountains, with a great view, hot tub and some snow activities for our family (with 5-year old) and this house was perfect! The view is spectacular, and hot tub was clean and worked great after some winter activities. There was even a pretty good sledding hill near the visitor center. Hawksnest for tubing and Blowing Rock were about an hour away, but pretty drives nonetheless.

Perfect little getaway

This place is amazing! What a perfect place to get away and relax. Enjoyed just sitting on the porch and taking in the beautiful view. The road up to the cabin is very steep, narrow and have a few blind corners so take caution and go slow. Other than that, this place is perfect!

Not so good points: Needs a thorough top to bottom cleaning e.g. the stair runners are so dusty they belched dust when hit with luggage;
the hot tub could be warmer; needed more bath towels.
The main complaints were with the information about activities and location: the gate was being repaired so only ONE day in eleven was horseback riding available; the 'stream was about 6 inches deep so not possible to go tubing; the swimming pool was small and basically the size for children; the whole place Leatherwood and the cabin is very isolated and times to get anywhere close as given were 25-30% underestimated; the staff though friendly answered pretty much every question with "I don't know"; this was not however followed with "I'll find out". Overall the stay was disappointing.

Beautiful Cabin but isolated location.

As previous reviewers have said, this is a beautiful cabin with great views from the covered balcony. The cabin was spotless and the decor was interesting.
However, the cabin is located in the middle of nowhere. It is a one hour roundtrip to find groceries and if you want a nice meal in a restaurant, it is a two hour roundtrip to Boone or Blowing Rock with difficult roads if you attempt to drive in the dark. The wineries are at least a two hour roundtrip. If the isolation is not a concern to you, this cabin is a great choice and cannot be faulted. We, however enjoy exploring local restaurants and wineries and this is a problematic base for exploring.

It was wonderful! The cabin was perfect and the accommodations were great. The only issue I have is it’s so hard to get a horse trailer in and out of there. There was a perfect place to turn around a truck and trailer across the road but the gate to do so was locked. That would of made it so much easier and accessible.
